Poem for Dusty:Written Sept.1974 / Reba Brooks (Sister)
In the year of Nineteen and Fifty-Four
On a cool September morn
Up in the hills of Wilkes county
A baby boy was born
He was a handsome baby
So precious and so sweet
His parents finally decided
To call him Dusty Dean
He grew into a fine young man
And off he went to school
But after awhile school got tough
He didn't like the rules
So Dusty left the school one day
Never to return
For Dusty was a working man now
Money he had to earn
Once again he grew restless
He decided to work for another man
But this time it was someone we all know
A man named Uncle Sam
So he left his home in Wilkes county
In the hills of the Caroline
With a promise to return
After he served his time
Dusty was always close to home
Til one day there was a change of plans
Uncle Sam had told him
He had to go to a foreign land
He boarded the plane one cool June morning
With his family there to see
Where his Father kissed him
With a tear on his cheek
As he headed overseas
Almost a year passed by
Since the day he boarded that plane
Every one was happy
Our soldier was returning again
Then something happened
Something had gone wrong
It seemed there was an emergency
Our soldier had to come home
For you see his Father had passed away
And everyone was sad
Dusty would be coming home
To see them bury his Dad
But Dusty didn't make it home in time
He was already in the ground
This hurt Dusty very bad
And he just layed around
In days to come he grew to drink
To take things off his mind
I guess he couldn't seem to forget
How he never saw his Dad
That one last time
Dusty got into trouble and fights
Everyone said he was a mean lad
Couldn't anyone take the time to see
How much he was missing his Dad
Pretty soon things got to rough
And Dusty couldn't take it
As long as he just stayed around
He knew he wouldn't make it
So once again ole Uncle Sam
Called this fine young man
I want you to go back overseas
And serve the best you can
So over in a foreign land
There's a soldier tall and lean
He is my precious Brother
That handsome Dusty Dean
